A total of 38 Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) officers successfully completed a one-day Certified Fire Warden Training held at the Fiji Corrections Coffee Shop in Suva earlier this week.
The training was facilitated by Sub Officer Tomasi Tuilevu from the Department of Fire Safety and Compliance, National Fire Authority (NFA).
The session was officially opened by the Assistant Commissioner of Corrections Operations (ACCO), Mr. Alevio Turaga, who shared his personal experience as one of the first FCS officers to undergo the same training back in 2001.
Mr. Turaga emphasized the importance of preparedness, vigilance, and collaboration with key emergency response agencies such as the NFA.
The initiative was spearheaded by FCS Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Officer, PCO Penaia Rakokoti, who identified the need for refresher training among staff to strengthen awareness and response capabilities during fire emergencies.

βThis program was designed to ensure that every officer is confident and capable in executing proper fire drills and safety procedures during emergencies. Knowledge saves lives, and preparedness protects our people and infrastructure,β said PCO Rakokoti.
The training covered key areas including fire prevention, evacuation protocols, fire extinguisher use, and emergency coordination, aligning with national safety standards.
This also fosters better inter-agency collaboration between the Fiji Corrections Service and the National Fire Authority β a vital partnership in promoting workplace safety and operational readiness.
The Fiji Corrections Service remains committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of its personnel, visitors, and inmates through continuous training and adherence to occupational health and safety regulations.
