His Excellency, Ambassador Filipo Tarakiniki, Fiji’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations (PRUN) made a special visit to the Fiji Corrections Headquarters on Thursday 20.11. 25 to discuss and share his knowledge on key development issues relevant to the FCS.
The FCS Command group led by the Deputy Commissioner, Auta Moceisuva with the support of the Permanent Secretary for Justice, Ms. Selina Kuruleca made a presentation on the current operations at the FCS, the achievements, key challenges and the strategic focus in line with the Annual Corporate Plan, Strategic Development Plan drawn from the strategies outlined in the National Development Plan 2025-2029.
HE Ambassador Tarakinikini, shared critical pathways that need to be established to enable the FCS to seek assistance from the UN agencies to enhance its infrastructure development. “Its important to understand that the UN, is where every country comes together to share and discuss global issues and possible solutions which can then be utilized by member countries – but the onus is on the government to adopt models suitable for sustainable development or not to inspire growth”.
Key takeaways from the discussions centred on the need to develop an infrastructure development plan, cross sector approach to rehabilitation focused on change and productivity, national intelligence conversation, review of programme targeting self realization, joint staff training course at senior level and continued review of policies to meet the emerging global challenges in the field of corrections.
The meeting also discussed the possibility of re-engaging Corrections Officers on Tour of Duties on UN Missions.
Prior to his appointment as Fiji’s PRUN, His Excellency, Ambassador Tarakinikini was chief of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) section at the UN Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) in the UN headquarters in New York in 2018, where he led UN inter-agency assessment missions to countries such as Iraq, and Syria; facilitated the establishment of the UN monitoring missions in Yemen, Iraq and Libya and led numerous field assistance missions.
