Vienna, Austria – Assistant Commissioner of Corrections Administration Rusiate Batiratu is participating in the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Expert Group Meeting on the Climate Change Handbook for Prison Systems, held at the Vienna International Centre in Vienna, Austria, from 28–30 October 2026.
The meeting brought together experts to review the draft handbook and discuss ways prison administrations can address climate change, prepare for natural disasters and promote environmentally sustainable correctional facilities.
The meeting provided an opportunity to share Fiji’s perspectives and highlight the challenges faced by Pacific Island countries, particularly in relation to extreme weather events, disaster preparedness, and the safety and welfare of people in custody and correctional staff.
Participation also provided valuable exposure to international practices and guidance that can assist the Fiji Corrections Service in improving emergency planning, environmental management and the resilience of correctional facilities.
The meeting highlighted the importance of international cooperation in preparing prison systems for climate-related challenges while maintaining safe and humane conditions for people in custody.
