The September fire at the Rarawai Sugar Mill has stretched the cane cutting operations to January 2026 to enable farmers to complete their harvests and for the mill to meet its quota.
This means that the FCS Musu Dovu crew comprising of 150 inmates will remain at their respective Corrections Centers in Ba, Tavua and Rakiraki over the festive season.
Over the past two days, the workforce and their officers were visited by the Assistant Commissioner of Corrections Operations, Mr Alevio Turaga and Director Operations and Intelligence, Superintendent Lemeki Rokovesa.
Also accompanying them were ASC Jone Nasulunibawa, OC Lautoka CC and ASC Ledua Guyaco, OC Lautoka Remand.
The team also met with Ministry of Sugar Director, Mr Praneel Naidu to discuss issues in relation to the extension of the season and also the welfare of the inmates and personnel on the ground.
“Purpose of visit was to personally thank the inmates on the task been carried out commencing from the first date till now. And also remind all that festive season is around the corner and we are still engaging with few farmers.
“Our main task is to help out farmers and support the sugar industry.
The team visited FCS personnel and inmates in the cane cutting sites from Lautoka, Ba, Tavua and Rakiraki including their accommodations.
“We also specifically also wanted to talk to our fellow officers who will be away from their family this festive season, we commend them for answering the call of duty and for maintaining the standards this season as we have not experienced any breaches or discipline issues so far.
The Musu Dovu Operations began in 2013 to help address the labour gap in the sugar industry.
