The Acting Commissioner of Corrections, Mr Sevuloni Naucukidi, together with the Deputy Commissioner of Corrections, Mr Auta Moceisuva, and a delegation of senior officers, visited Turaga na Tui Kaba na Vunivalu, Ratu Epenisa Cakobau, yesterday on Bau Island to present a formal traditional vakavinavinaka.
The visit was held in honour of the Vunivaluโ€™s acceptance to be part of the Armed Native Constabulary (ANC) 150th Anniversary commemorations, a milestone that celebrates a century and a half of service, sacrifice, and history shared between key national institutions.
During the occasion, the Acting Commissioner also acknowledged the significance of the historic ANC Ratu Cakobau Bowl, which was won during the anniversary week.
The iconic Tanoa or Bowl โ€”donated last year ago by the Cakobau family โ€”remains a symbol of unity, sportsmanship, and the deep ties going as far back as 150 years between the Fiji Police Force and the Fiji Corrections Service, who will now continue to compete for it annually on the rugby field.
Mr Naucukidi expressed profound gratitude to the Turaga na Tui Kaba and his family for the enduring legacy of the bowl, stating that the Fiji Corrections Service remains โ€œdeeply appreciative and honoured to uphold a tradition gifted by the esteemed Cakobau family.โ€
He further highlighted that the gesture made a century and a half ago continues to strengthen camaraderie and respectful relations between the two disciplined services.
The Fiji Corrections Service extends its sincere thanks to the chiefly family of Ratu Cakobau for their continued support and for safeguarding a heritage that remains an important part of Fijiโ€™s national story.
