Rakiraki, Fiji – Today marked a significant milestone for the Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) as it officially signed a five-year Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Management of Nakauvadra High School during a ceremony held at the school. This collaboration will see a portion of the school’s unused land dedicated to farming initiatives to improve food security for inmates involved in the cane harvesting season in Rakiraki.
The MOU follows productive discussions between the FCS and the Nakauvadra High School Board, resulting in a mutual agreement that benefits not only the inmates but also supports the school and the local community. In exchange for utilizing the land, the FCS will assist in maintaining the school’s unused areas and contribute to enhancing food security for its boarding students.
During the signing ceremony, the school principal expressed gratitude for the FCS’s commitment to effectively utilizing the land, emphasizing the positive impact this partnership will have on both the school and the surrounding community.

Commissioner of Corrections Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa commended the school board for their willingness to provide land for this initiative, highlighting that this collaboration represents the beginning of FCS’s broader aspirations for community engagement and development in Rakiraki. He also revealed ongoing discussions to establish a permanent rehabilitation center in the area, which aims to provide low-security inmates with opportunities to earn income through participation in the sugarcane harvesting program. This initiative not only offers rehabilitation for inmates but also supports local farmers within the Rakiraki sector, contributing to the revitalization of Fiji’s sugar industry.
The FCS remains committed to fostering partnerships that enhance rehabilitation efforts and strengthen community ties. This landmark agreement with Nakauvadra High School is a testament to our dedication to creating a safer and more sustainable community.
