The Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) and the New Zealand Department of Corrections convened today via a zoom call at the FCS National Headquarters in Suva to reaffirm their ongoing partnership focused on infrastructure development, training, and capability support.
This collaboration, initiated in 2024, aims to enhance the professionalism and operational efficiency of Fiji’s correctional system. The meeting with Director Pasifika Communities, Partnership & Pathways, New Zealand Corrections, Mr. PA’O Robert (PONEKE) highlighted the progress made since six FCS officers completed a week-long training in New Zealand in November 2024. That program, conducted in partnership with the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Department of Corrections, focused on crisis management, the application of minimum force, and maintaining discipline within correctional facilities. Following the training, a team from the NZ Department of Corrections was scheduled to travel to Fiji to design a comprehensive program and support local trainers in implementing the training for FCS.
Today’s discussions centered on evaluating the outcomes of these initiatives and planning future collaborative efforts to further enhance the capabilities of FCS in capacity building and other emerging operational challenges.
Both parties expressed a strong commitment to continuing this partnership, recognizing its vital role in promoting effective rehabilitation and ensuring community safety.
