The Honourable Siromi Turaga, Minister of Justice, recently met with the command group of the Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) to discuss the way forward in enhancing efficient and effective leadership.
The meeting, which took place at the Fiji Corrections Service Headquarters, focused on strategic planning and collaboration between the Ministry and the FCS in addressing current challenges and implementing forward-thinking solutions within the corrections sector. The discussions aimed to improve operational standards, employment redress legal framework reviews, and addressing issues within FCS.
The Hon. Minister Turaga praised the FCS for its ongoing efforts in improving correctional practices, while stressing the need for continued reform to better align with the government’s demands. “Our commitment to justice and rehabilitation remains steadfast,” said Hon. Minister Turaga. “We must work together to enhance the support systems for both staff and inmates, ensuring that we pave the way forward while maintaining efficiency and transparency in the work we do.”
The Hon. Minister reaffirmed his dedication to supporting the FCS in its efforts to bring about meaningful change. “This is a critical time for the corrections system in Fiji, and I am committed to working closely with the FCS command group to ensure that we continue moving forward with effective solutions and sustainable reforms,” Hon. Minister Turaga concluded.
“The Fiji Corrections Service has made significant strides, but there are ongoing challenges that need our immediate attention,” said Hon. Minister Turaga. “We must work together to address these issuesโ€”whether it’s staffing issues, operations, or the need for an effective work plan. We cannot afford to overlook these challenges, as they directly impact both the integrity of FCS and the morale of FCS officers.โ€
The discussions during the meeting included a review of current operational practices, areas for improvement, and the introduction of modern solutions aimed at addressing these issues.
The Honourable Siromi Turaga, Minister of Justice, today inducted the newly appointed Acting Commissioner Sevuloni Naucukidi.
The induction ceremony, held at the Fiji Corrections Service headquarters, marked a pivotal moment for the Fiji Corrections Service as it navigates through leadership changes. Hon. Minister Turaga expressed confidence in the Acting Commissionerโ€™s ability to lead the FCS during this transitional period and emphasized the importance of continuing the FCS’s reform and the command group’s support to the newly appointed Acting Commissioner.
โ€œThe appointment of the Acting Commissioner Sevuloni Naucukidi comes at a crucial time for the Fiji Corrections Service, and I have full faith that under his leadership, the service will continue to make significant strides in impactful leadership working hand in hand with the Ministry for better service delivery,โ€ Hon. Minister Turaga stated. โ€œI would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate him on his appointment and wish him every success as he steers the FCS forward.โ€
The induction ceremony also provided an opportunity for the Acting Commissioner to outline his immediate priorities and vision for the service. These include addressing critical issues, focusing on staff training and operations, enhancing rehabilitation programs, and ensuring the ongoing safety and security of correctional facilities operations.
The Acting Commissioner Sevuloni Naucukidi, in his address, thanked the Constitutional Office Commission for the trust and confidence placed in him and reaffirmed his commitment to upholding the highest standards within the Fiji Corrections Service.
โ€œI am honored to serve as the Acting Commissioner, and I look forward to working closely with the entire FCS team and the Ministry of Justice to tackle the challenges ahead and ensure the successful implementation of our reforms,โ€ said the Acting Commissioner Sevuloni Naucukidi.
