The Fiji Corrections Service will hold the 2025 Yellow Ribbon Walk in Nausori on Saturday, 19 July.
The Walk, an initiative of the Yellow Ribbon Programme, began in 2008 with the objective of educating the community on their roles and responsibilities towards ensuring the successful reintegration of prisoners upon their release.
The FCS would like to invite everyone to join in this community engagement program aimed at promoting and creating the conditions that allow ex-offenders to live a life without stigma when they return home.
The Acting Commissioner of Corrections Mr Sevuloni Naucukidi, says this stigma of being branded as an ex-offender prevents them from trying to live a normal life.
โ€œThis is what we refer to as he second prison โ€“ the walls imposed by society, and it is a tougher one to deal with, even when they return home fully transformed.”
He adds that with the theme โ€“ Walk for Action, it was important for society to Change, Forgive and be more accepting.
โ€œOur aim at the end of the day is for them to return back home as members who will contribute positively back to their families and community. They cannot do that if they are not accepted back into their communities, are not given opportunity to work and so forth.
โ€œThey will fall back into the cycle of crime if they are not given a chance to move on in life. They have served their time, paid for their crime and now we need them to move on in life so that they do not become a security risk or a burden to us in the long run.โ€
Why Nausori?
Commissioner Naucukidi says, Nausori Town is growing rapidly and with it also the incarceration rate from the three adjoining provinces of Rewa, Naitasiri and Tailevu.
โ€œTailevu continues to top the statistics for the last five years, so we are bringing this program to their doorsteps.โ€
Everyone is encouraged to attend this event, which is the biggest of its kind in the region.
The event will begin from Ratu Cakobau Park from 5am in the morning for registrations where tee shirts will be offered. The walk is scheduled to begin at 6.30am. Online registrations will also be opened a week prior to the event.
The walk ends at Syria Park where a hive of activities are set up for the day.
