The Fiji Corrections Service convened a meeting with the Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission (FHRADC) yesterday to discuss pending issues of complaints.
Acting Commissioner of Corrections, Mr Auta Moceisuva, assured Commissioner Alefina Vuki of the Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission (FHRADC) that the FCS was ready to work more closely with them moving forward, as the changing leadership had impacted their working relationship.
Also in attendance was Investigations and Senior Complaints Officer, Mr Tiko Nobis.
“I know we have had queries brought to us by you that have often been delayed due to the changes in our processes but what I must assure you is that we are always working under the guidance of the human rights principles.
“We are coordinating with the Office of the Human Rights Commissioner and they have asked for a combined collaboration with us and the FHRADC to highlight key areas where they can offer assistance to help us achieve our priority areas as far as ensuring that we are able to work according to the standards.
Mr Moceisuva also explained in detail the basic operations of each Prison as opposed to the Remand Centers and the difference between what is written and the reality on the ground including the different types of inmate behaviour when under incarceration.
Ms Vuki said they appreciated the opportunity to meet as they now have a fair idea of how they can proceed with their investigations in a more efficient manner.
The meeting discussed ways and means to attend to case reports against the FCS and how they will proceed in a timely manner to see that all remaining questions are answered.
