𝐀𝐂𝐓𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐂𝐎𝐌𝐌𝐈𝐒𝐒𝐈𝐎𝐍𝐄𝐑 𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐓𝐈𝐍𝐔𝐄𝐒 𝐌𝐔𝐒𝐔 𝐃𝐎𝐕𝐔 𝐎𝐏𝐄𝐑𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍𝐒 𝐓𝐎𝐔𝐑 𝐈𝐍 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐖𝐄𝐒𝐓𝐄𝐑𝐍 𝐃𝐈𝐕𝐈𝐒𝐈𝐎𝐍

The visit is focused on assessing the progress of the Musu Dovu sugar cane initiative, engaging key stakeholders, and visiting Corrections personnel and inmates involved in the programme.

During the visit, the Acting Supervisor Western Division, Superintendent Jone Nasulinibawa, presented an overview of the Division’s sugar cane operations, highlighting achievements from 2025 and targets for 2026.

In 2025, the programme involved 44 farms and harvested approximately 8,628.93 tonnes of sugar cane at $20 per tonne, generating total revenue of $207,949.40.

For 2026, the programme is targeting an expansion to 106 farms, with an estimated 17,200 tonnes of cane expected to be harvested. This is projected to generate approximately $344,000 in revenue, representing an additional 62 farms compared to 2025.

The presentation also highlighted the revenue-sharing arrangement, with 60 percent allocated to inmates and 40 percent retained as the Government’s share.

Following the presentation, the Acting Commissioner and team visited the Director of Sugar, Mr Pranil Naidu, for discussions on the ongoing sugar cane operations and areas of cooperation to support the programme.

The visit also included a field inspection of farms where three gangs from the Lautoka Corrections Centre are currently deployed. The visit provided the team with an opportunity to observe the work being undertaken and engage with those directly involved in the operations.

The Musu Dovu initiative continues to provide inmates with opportunities to participate in productive agricultural activities while contributing to their rehabilitation, skills development and eventual reintegration into society.

The Acting Commissioner and team will continue their Western Division sugar cane farm visits to Ba, Tavua and Rakiraki later this week as part of the ongoing assessment and strengthening of the Musu Dovu programme.
