NABORO, FIJI — The Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) gathered alongside law enforcement colleagues and invited guests at the Naboro K9 Unit today to pay its final, solemn respects to one of its most dedicated and distinguished operational assets, K9 Boss, who passed away recently following a short illness.

Born on 18 June 2016, the loyal Doberman officially commenced his journey with the FCS K9 Unit on 23 September 2016 upon completing his rigorous initial training. K9 Boss quickly established himself as an exceptionally dependable, highly motivated working dog, going on to anchor critical operations across the Southern, Central, and Western Divisions.

Throughout his exemplary career, K9 Boss served on the frontlines of major national security and institutional operations:

• National Crisis Response: Deployed heavily across Naboro and Nasinu during the COVID-19 pandemic to maintain operational containment.

• Musu Dovu Operations: Stationed in Rakiraki to provide vital perimeter security in the sugarcane fields, preventing breaches and escapes while inmates were at work through 2024 and 2025.

• Escaped Convict Recapture: Played a pivotal role in 2018 by directly assisting tracking teams in the successful recapture of six escapees from the Maximum Corrections Center.

• Contraband Interdiction: Spearheaded regular sweeps throughout 2019, successfully detecting illicit drugs concealed within the Naboro prison compounds.

Reflecting on the loss, his dedicated handler, Corrections Officer Class A (COA) N. Luveicei, shared a moving tribute to his partner’s ultimate sacrifice.

“The loss of a service dog is deeply felt because they give their whole lives to the service without any expectation of reward,” COA Luveicei expressed. “Their loyalty was always absolute, their commitment unquestioned, and their dedication unwavering.”

The final perimeter watch and funeral service was attended by senior leadership, including the Deputy Commissioner of Corrections, Mr. Apolosa Veve; Supervisor Southern Division, Superintendent Alevio Turaganivalu; and Inspector S. Kuruvaladua of the Fiji Police Force.

Personnel from the Naboro K9 Family, the Southern Division Family, and the Fiji Police Force Force K9 Family stood shoulder-to-shoulder to salute their fallen comrade.
