NABORO, FIJI – Provincial Council vows Vanua support for rehabilitated citizens returning to island communities. Representatives from the Kadavu Provincial Council, led by Roko Tui Kadavu Mr. Joji Banuve, conducted a historic courtesy visit to the Naboro Corrections Complex yesterday.

The high-level delegation included 15 High Chiefs from Kadavu who traveled to the facility following last week’s Kadavu Day Solevu (Soli) in Suva. The visit focused on direct engagement, community reconciliation, and establishing concrete support networks for inmates preparing to return to their home villages.

During the visit, the delegation achieved several critical milestones:

Direct Talanoa: Chiefs engaged in open dialogue and Q&A sessions with inmates originating from Kadavu. Resettlement Assurances: The Vanua guaranteed practical assistance for released individuals to establish sustainable livelihoods on the island. Needs Assessment: Council leadership conducted first-hand evaluations of the resources required for successful community re-entry.

“The Council and the Vanua have a cultural and moral obligation to attend to our own who need a second chance in life,” said Mr. Joji Banuve, Roko Tui Kadavu. “We are happy to come and learn firsthand what they will need, and most importantly, to give them hope for their futures.”

The Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) highlighted the visit as a model for modern correctional rehabilitation, emphasizing that institutional efforts must be matched by community acceptance to prevent reoffending.

“FCS cannot do the work of reintegration alone; we need the Vanua to lead the way,” stated Mr. Alevio Turaga, Supervisor Southern Division. “Seeing the Roko Tui Kadavu himself leading this charge shows Kadavu is serious about reintegration efforts that promote peaceful and secure communities.”
